Budding scientists from Cavan and Monaghan represented their schools and communities with pride as they exhibited projects at the Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (YSTE) in the RDS Dublin last week.

Every one of the 11 Cavan Monaghan projects the Celt spoke to showcased the students' impressive innovation, and dedication to bring them from conception to completion. Nine projects from County Cavan and two from County Monaghan qualified for the exhibition.

The projects were assisted by science teachers who took on the extra curricular work to support their students in developing ideas and presenting their finished projects.

St Bricin's College in Belturbet had no less than five projects, overseen by one very enthusiastic science teacher - Daryl Dunne.

They are entitled: 'Scroll, Listen, Repeat'; 'Spectators, Safety and Science'; 'From Dolls to Dermis'; 'Optimising Nutrient Retention in Hydroponics'; and The Grass is Greener with Alpacas.

Virginia College, meanwhile, will feature two projects - on vacuum silage pits and the effect of wind on forestry and fauna.

Students from Breifne College in Cavan Town have entered a project cleverly called pHaulty Foundations. Moving to Monaghan and Castleblayney College will feature two projects - on Plant Growth and Shading the Future. Our Lady’s Secondary School in Castleblayney will also demonstrate their project on plant growth.

Each of these projects will be showcased in The Anglo-Celt newspaper on Wednesday coming.

The importance of this annual national event was highlighted by the attendance of President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly at its launch. She welcomed the many TDs in attendance, adding that she had been there before as a TD herself.

It was a privilege to address YSTE 2026 as the 10th Uachtarán na hÉireann, she observed: “The Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is a key event for secondary school students to display their creativity, ingenuity and knowledge. The quality and variety of projects is outstanding. I feel tremendous hope for the future as I stand here. That hope comes from you, young people,” she said.
