Lough Muckno Masterplan due

A draft masterplan setting out a long-term vision for Lough Muckno Park and Estate is expected in early 2026, with an update presentation to local councillors scheduled in advance of the January Municipal District meeting.

Consultants Cunnane Stratton Reynolds were appointed in May 2025 to prepare the masterplan, which aims to guide the sustainable development of Lough Muckno and strengthen its integration with Castleblayney town.

Public consultation has already taken place, and the proposed masterplan will incorporate short, medium and long-term interventions designed to enhance recreation, tourism, accessibility and environmental protection.

Public submissions have been reviewed, and consultants are now developing emerging options for future projects. As part of this process, potential and feasible uses for Hope Castle, the Annexe and adjacent outbuildings are being fully explored.

In recent years, significant enhancements have been made to the recreational amenities of Lough Muckno and its environs, including the development of walking trails, fishing stands, a playground and car parking facilities, as well as the refurbishment of the Gate Lodges to accommodate a library and community facilities.

While previous studies have examined opportunities for the future development of Lough Muckno, this masterplan represents the most comprehensive and coordinated effort to date to attract investment and transform the existing leisure park into a major regional destination.

The study area includes the lake and its surrounding lands, encompassing Hope Castle, the Annexe buildings, parklands, farmlands, and areas of the town in the immediate vicinity of the lake.
