Father of six named as Shercock crash victim

Funeral arrangements still awaited

The man who lost his life in a collision between a car and a lorry near Shercock earlier this week has been named locally as married father of six from Louth.

David McBride (44), from Station Road, Drumleck, Castlebellingham, was driving the car involved in the fatal road traffic collision which occurred on the R192 at Corcloughan, Shercock, at approximately 7.30am on Monday, January 2.

It is understood he was carrying out newspaper deliveries at the time of the crash.

Emergency services and Gardaí rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Mr McBride was pronounced dead a short time later.

The lorry driver, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital for assessment.

According to notices on Rip.ie, David is deeply mourned by his heartbroken wife Paula, his six sons - Conor, Danny, Oisín, Felím, Culín and Dathí - parents Brendan and Gillian, brother Shane, sister Donna, extended family, and a wide circle of friends.

A death notice also describes him as being “dearly loved by his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, his close circle of friends and by all who knew him.”

Funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed, and the family have asked for privacy at this time.

Mr McBride’s death is the first fatality on Cavan roads so far in 2026 and the second road death in the wider region this year. It follows the death of Adrian Keenan from Fermoyle, Smithborough, Co Monaghan, who was killed last week when the car he was driving crashed on the R187 between Monaghan and Rosslea at Inishammon on Wednesday, January 28. Mr Keenan was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

By comparison, there were two fatalities on Cavan roads during all of 2025 and four in Monaghan.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the Shercock collision. Anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and may have relevant camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, is asked to come forward.

Those with information are urged to contact Bailieboro Garda Station on 042 9694570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
