Rain warning for Cavan and Monaghan

A status yellow rain warning has been issued this morning for counties Cavan, Monaghan and Louth; while other parts of the country will come under various wind and rain warnings.

Met Éireann is warning of "further rain falling on already saturated ground, combined with high river levels".

The public are being warned about the potential for localised flooding, river flooding and difficult travel conditions.

The warning for Cavan and Monaghan will take effect at noon today (Thursday) and remain in place until noon tomorrow (Friday).

Rain will develop in the southeast early this morning and will gradually spread northwestwards to all areas by mid-afternoon. It will be heaviest the southeast and east with flooding likely in places. Windy also with fresh easterly winds increasing strong to gale force along the east coast. Highest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees.

Tonight will be wet and breezy with rain continuing and flooding likely in the south and east. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 7 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty easterly winds, strong near eastern and northeastern coasts.

Friday morning will be wet again with rain continuing and flooding likely. Rain will become confined to the northern half of the country through the afternoon and evening with showers following from the south. Highest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees with moderate to fresh east or southeast winds.

Friday night will be mostly cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain in many areas. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 7 degrees. Some mist and hill fog will form with mostly light to moderate easterly breezes.

The weekend and into next week will continue unsettled with rain, sometimes heavy, or showers at times.
