Rain persists in Cavan and Monaghan as warning in place

Weather warning

A status yellow rain warning remains in place today for counties Cavan, Monaghan and Louth; while other parts of the country will come under various wind and rain warnings.

Met Éireann is warning of "further rain falling on already saturated ground, combined with high river levels".

The public are once again being warned about the potential for localised flooding, river flooding and difficult travel conditions.

The local warning will remain in place until noon today (Friday).

The national weather forecaster says today will be a very wet and cloudy day. Rain is continuing to spread north this morning, with some heavy falls across Munster and Connacht. The rain in the east and north-east will gradually ease this morning but with the continued risk of flooding. Staying rather overcast into the afternoon as the rain becomes confined to Ulster and scattered showers follow in from the south. Easterly breezes will be fresh about the coasts with highs of 7 to 10 degrees.

Staying cloudy tonight and rather wet with scattered showers. The showers will be heaviest and more persistent across Munster. Easterly breezes and lows of 3 to 6 degrees with some mist patches forming overnight too.

Another cloudy and unsettled day tomorrow with showers and limited bright spells. The showers will become more persistent during the afternoon. Easterly breezes will generally fall light with highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees.

A rather cloudy night overnight on Saturday then with a few showers across Munster and a few drifting in over east Leinster and Ulster. Dry elsewhere with winds falling light. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees. Some mist and fog patches forming too.

Any lingering mist and fog will clear on Sunday morning but it will remain cloudy overall. Showers will move in over Munster and south Leinster during the morning and afternoon but staying mostly dry elsewhere. Southerly breeze will strengthen with highs of 7 to 11 degrees.

Cloudy overnight on Sunday with showers becoming widespread for a time later in the night. Rain will move in across the south of the country overnight too, becoming heavy at times. South to southeast breezes will be fresh at times with lows of 4 to 8 degrees.

Staying unsettled in the early days of next week with low pressure in charge bringing further spells of rain or showers but temperatures hovering around or slightly above average.
