Man urinated on cell door

A Westmeath man, arrested for aggressive behaviour at Cavan Bus Station, who urinated on the cell door while in custody, has been jailed for three months.

Nathan Devanney (30) of Battery Heights, Athlone, appeared before Judge Raymond Finnegan at Cavan District Court via video link from the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.

He entered a plea of guilty to the charges - criminal damage at Cavan Garda Station on May 2, 2025; following intoxication, abusive behaviour and failing to give his name or address at Cavan Bus Station - but admitted he could not remember the incident.

The cost of the damage caused, which required professional cleaning, was €200.

The court heard Devanney was arrested after he became “aggressive” towards bus station staff, and had to be restrained by security staff.

Devanney had 96 previous convictions at the time, and his appearance in court in Cavan came a day after he was refused bail in relation to other matters in Athlone.

The defendant was represented in court by solicitor Garrett Fortune, who told the court his client had a “serious problem” with drugs over many years.

Judge Finnegan described Devanney urinating on the door as a “disgusting act”, imposing the three month sentence and taking into account all other matters.
