Sessions galore at this weekend’s NYAH festival
The heart of Cavan town will beat to a traditional rhythm this weekend as the NYAH (Not Your Average Hooley) festival returns for its 2026 edition. A cornerstone of the local cultural calendar, the festival promises an exhilarating weekend of workshops, sessions, and cross-cultural celebrations.
The craic kick off on Saturday, February 28 with a focus on honing the craft. For those seeking masterclass-level instruction, one-to-one 60-minute workshops are available with guest tutors for a €30 fee. These sessions are tailored for advanced youth and adult players and must be booked in advance via Cavan Music Live or by calling 086 2342270.
In a generous nod to the next generation of performers, NYAH is also offering two free workshops at the Farnham Arms Hotel to help artists prepare for the upcoming Fleadh.
At 11am, the acclaimed Dylan Duffy will lead a session in Sean-nós dance—the soulfully casual, old-style solo dance that stands in charming contrast to formal stepdance. Later, at 3pm, Mullahoran’s own champion singer and musician Hannah O’Reilly will host a traditional singing workshop in English. No booking is required for these free events; aspiring performers are encouraged to simply “turn up”.
The Farnham Arms Hotel Carvery Room will serve as the festival’s pulse point for sessions. Saturday’s lunchtime session (12pm) features the ‘Next Generation’, showcasing the formidable talents of Sean Curran, Niall Curran, Diarmaid Martin, Odhran Hyland Kinsella, and Ciaran Maguire.
As the afternoon matures, a 3.30pm open session will be led by a ‘Who’s Who’ of the trad world, including Dean Warner, Gary Lynch, and Martin Donohoe. Whether you’re a seasoned session player or a listener who enjoys a well-poured pint and a lively reel, the atmosphere is guaranteed to be electric.
The weekend includes on Sunday, March 1, with a special PRIDE Session & Dancing at 3pm, featuring visiting talent direct from Belfast.
Whether you’re there for the ceol or the craic, the NYAH Festival ensures that the traditional arts remain alive and kicking in the Breffni county. Don’t miss out on what promises to be a weekend for the ages.
