Season 5 of the ‘Where We Belong’ podcast set to drop
County Cavan’s rich social, cultural, and community history takes centre stage with the launch of the new series of Where We Belong, Cavan Heritage Office’s compelling audio series that captures the stories, memories, and lived experiences of remarkable people connected to the county and its wider diaspora.
Hosted by Savina Donohoe and directed by Alan Bradley, the series brings listeners into warm, in-depth conversations with individuals whose lives and work reflect the spirit, resilience, and heritage of Cavan. Through personal storytelling, reflection, humour, and insight, each episode preserves voices and experiences that might otherwise be lost, creating an accessible archive for present and future generations.
The podcast is an initiative of Cavan County Council’s Heritage Office and is supported by the Heritage Council.
Cavan Heritage Office Ann Marie Ward says: “The Cavan Heritage Podcast blends oral history, community memory, and engaging storytelling, making it valuable for local listeners, the Cavan diaspora, historians, and anyone interested in the people and stories that shape place and identity.”
This season features a diverse and inspiring lineup of guests including a special sporting heritage episode captures the memories of Cavan GAA players Ray Carolan, Gabriel Kelly, Cormac Cahill, Phil ‘Lightning’ Murray and the sadly since-deceased Tom Lynch, who competed in matches at London’s Wembley Stadium between 1958 and the early 1970s. Filled with camaraderie, laughter, and vivid recollections, the conversation preserves an extraordinary chapter in Cavan sporting history.
Dr Garrett Igoe, a GP who has served the people of Virginia for more than thirty years reflects on decades of medical practice, late-night calls, lifelong patient relationships, and the profound changes he has witnessed in both healthcare and community life.
Another episode explores the remarkable story of Fresh Today, a family business founded in Arvagh in 1889 and grew into a major regional wholesaler. Managing Director Michael Ellis shares memories of growing up in the trade, guiding the company through change and expansion, and maintaining strong community values across generations.
Listeners are also invited into a thoughtful and inspiring conversation with Sr Susan and Sr Bernadette of the Holy Rosary Sisters. They recount a tradition that saw women from rural Ireland travel across continents as missionaries, teachers, and nurses.
Where We Belong will be launched at the Kingspan Breffni Park Breffni Gallery Cavan on March 25 and will be available on all major podcast platforms including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
