‘Deathtrap’ Bboro junction needs solution, says Cllr

New road markings at the Market Street–Church Street junction in Cootehill.

Frustration is rising in Bailieborough as locals warn a busy town-centre junction—previously labelled among the worst in the country- remains a “deathtrap” with no quick fix in sight.

The junction linking Main Street, Barrack Street and Thomas Street near Market Square continues to pose risks to motorists and pedestrians said Fianna Fáil councillor Niall Smith.

Speaking at the Bailieborough-Cootehill Municipal District meeting, he warned the situation is reaching critical point, and another accident is likely if nothing is done.

But councillors were told action must wait for the wider €792,000 Bailieborough Town Regeneration Plan.

Senior Area Engineer Clinton Mulligan said earlier surveys will inform the masterplan, with options developed alongside the National Transport Authority. A final design will determine the solution.

Meanwhile in Cootehill, road markings at the Market Street–Church Street junction will be upgraded after a recent crash. Councillor Carmel Brady welcomed the move but warned markings may wear quickly under heavy traffic.
