Virginia fall just short in dramatic cup final

Strabane RFC 21

Virginia RFC 18

There was heartbreak for Virginia RFC on Saturday as they were narrowly defeated by Strabane RFC in a thrilling Gordon West Cup final in Belfast.

It marked Virginia’s first-ever appearance in the showpiece decider, and they rose to the occasion against a strong Strabane side who came into the contest as league leaders. With one win apiece from their previous league encounters this season, the stage was perfectly set for a fiercely competitive final—and it delivered in full.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the opening half, Virginia started brightly despite difficult handling conditions caused by showers. Early exchanges were scrappy, with Strabane misjudging the swirling wind to push a penalty attempt wide.

Virginia soon found their rhythm, with Ronan Smith using the elements expertly to pin Strabane deep in their own territory. Sustained pressure followed, driven by strong carries from Rioghan Smith, Luke Brodie and Evan Charter. Their efforts were rewarded in the 19th minute when Ronan Smith confidently slotted a superb 40-metre drop goal following a goal line restart after winger Stuart Lochaden was narrowly denied a kick-chase try opportunity. Virginia took a 3–0 lead.

Strabane responded in dramatic fashion. A loose kick was seized upon by Christian Grobbler, who surged the length of the pitch, he was bundled into touch by Jack Carroll but still managed to offload brilliantly to set up a try in the corner. The difficult conversion was added, putting Strabane 7–3 ahead.

Virginia, however, were not rattled. Patient build-up play led to a well-worked try for full-back Cian Wogan to cross the line. Although the conversion was missed, Virginia edged into an 8–7 lead at halftime.

At the break, Virginia were in control, asserting their dominance across all key areas. Their set-piece was particularly impressive, with both scrum and lineout functioning efficiently, while Alexander Walker consistently disrupted Strabane’s throw. Defensively, Virginia stood strong, and despite the difficult conditions, the Cavan side showed ambition in attack.

The centre partnership of Daire McEnroe and Adam Sherriff were constant threats, probing the defensive line at every opportunity. However, this dominance was not fully reflected on the scoreboard and Strabane had the wind at their backs for the second half.

From the off, Strabane quickly regained the lead through a penalty from William Finlay, making it 10–8.

Virginia nearly hit back immediately, but Smith’s penalty attempt struck the post. Alert play saw them regain possession, and after sustained pressure near the line, Oliver Lötscher finished off a smart attacking move to score in the corner. Smith converted this time, restoring Virginia’s advantage at 15–10.

As the game entered its final quarter, Strabane began to assert themselves. Persistent pressure and Virginia’s difficulty in clearing their lines allowed the Tyrone side to stay on the front foot. Virginia freshened up their troops with substitutes Nial Preston and Aidan Kiernan introduced. Despite heroic defensive efforts—including a crucial intervention from Michael Piennar that made the entire stand roar—Strabane eventually broke through. Grobbler once again proved decisive, weaving through defenders in his trademark run to level the score at 15–15.

With tension mounting, both sides exchanged penalties to leave the match poised at 18–18 and just minutes remaining. The atmosphere was electric as supporters from both clubs urged their teams on.

In the dying moments, Strabane seized their opportunity. After sustained pressure and a missed drop goal attempt, Grobbler stepped up once more. With composure under immense pressure, he struck a decisive drop goal from 30 metres out to seal a dramatic 21–18 victory as the clock turned red.

It was a final that will be remembered not just for its result, but for its quality—an outstanding advertisement for the Gordon West Cup and Junior Club Rugby in Ulster.

Despite the disappointment, Virginia RFC will take heart from their performance.

Competing at such a high level with a squad developed through the club’s Minis and Youth system represents a significant milestone, and a source of deep, lasting pride.
