Waterford's Orla Hickey not a fan of camogie rule change

Waterford camogie player Orla Hickey has criticised changes to the sideline puck rule introduced this season.
At the start of the 2026 season, a number of new rules were introduced, including allowing shoulder-to-shoulder tackles, penalties for dissent from players and team officials, and restricting communication with referees to team captains.
Another rule introduced is the sildine puck, which may now be taken from the player's hand if she is inside her own 45.
Waterford's Hickey is not a fan of this rule and says it takes away from the skill of the sideline ball.
"I don't think it should be changing. I think the game should stay where it is, what we know. The sidelines are there for a reason.
"I think it is a skill. You can see in camogie, you can get two points if you score from a sideline, so I don't see why you don't try to improve the skill.
"I actually wasn't aware of them until one of the girls said it. They are trial and error; they are being brought in for a reason.
"We just get on with the game and play the game."
Waterford got off to a flying start in Division 1A, finishing top with a game to spare. They also already have a win over the Tribeswomen this season.
They will face All-Ireland champions Galway in Nowlan Park on April 12th, in a game that could easily be a preview to this year's All-Ireland semifinal or final.
The Waterford defender does not expect either team to hold back in the league decider.
"I think we are going to put out strong teams; nobody is going to throw it on the day."
Hickey says winning the league "would be the best start you could ask for."
She says new faces in the squad and a change in mentality have helped their strong start to the season.
"I think new girls bring new girls into camp, our mentality has slightly changed. We do have the belief in us, in our camp and in the team."
