Reforestation after storm damage
On Thursday, April 30, Teagasc, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Western Forestry Co-op will hold an event, showcasing best practices in reforestation. This practical demonstration will take place in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, and offers a unique opportunity to see first-hand how forests can be successfully re-established and improved after the timber crop has been removed.
Reforestation is more than simply replanting trees it’s about creating stronger, more resilient forests for the future. Research shows that replanting especially using improved planting stock can deliver greater yields than the original forest, while also opening the door to diversifying species and strengthening climate resilience. Thoughtful planning, species selection, and modern techniques can significantly enhance productivity and long-term sustainability.
This event will be of importance to forest owners impacted by recent storms or preparing to clearfell. On the day, you will:
· Walk through a forest currently undergoing reforestation after storm damage
· Observe each stage of the replanting process in a real-world setting
· Gain practical insights and expert guidance on:
· Felling licences and harvesting plans
· Ground preparation and optimal species selection
· Planting techniques and ongoing maintenance
· Grant aid, including the Reconstitution Scheme for Windblow 2026 and the Climate Resilient Reforestation Pilot Scheme.
