Dog fouling on the rise once more in Carrickmacross

“There is an issue with bins not being replenished with dog fouling bags at various locations. We are undermining ourselves on this issue if the environment section doesn’t have money to do it,” Cllr Colm Carthy told last week’s meeting of Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District (MD).

The Sinn Féin representative added that when he first joined the local authority dog fouling came up at every second meeting.

Referring to a previous debate at the full meeting of Monaghan County Council, Fianna Fáil’s PJ O’Hanlon said he agreed with Cllr Carthy 100%.

“I was nipping myself saying ‘Beam me up Scotty.’ If something is working, don’t change it. We had that sorted. How much is it? A couple of hundred euro? I can’t get my head around it. If the Environment Section can’t get a couple of hundred euro a year for dog fouling bags, it doesn't make sense. The problem is getting worse again. Who’s at fault? We are, nobody else. If something is working leave it alone.”

Cllr Peter Conlon (FG) was all for replenishing the dog fouling bins with bags because: “As a dog owner, I have brought my dog out for a walk umpteen times and forgot to take bags with me. It would put the fear of God in you!”

Sinn Féin’s Noel Keelan commented: “We shouldn’t even be discussing this. It’s one of the simple things we should continue to do.”

Director of Services for the area Cathal Flynn said he would revisit the issue with the Environment Section.
