Catherine the Great!

Catherine the Great!

For Catherine Clarke (right), community volunteering is all about creating opportunities and making sure no child feels left out.

Originally from Bailieborough, the dental nurse and mum-of-two moved to Knockbride nine years ago and quickly immersed herself in local life. What began with helping at school cake sales and discos soon developed into a mission to provide more affordable activities for children and teenagers in the local area.

“I believe every child deserves enjoyable activities and a sense of belonging in their community,” Catherine explained.

Seeing a lack of options for young people outside football, she helped establish Knockbride Foróige, giving teenagers a safe and welcoming place to meet every Friday night. From trips and games to first aid, photography, self-defence and cooking, the club has become a vital social outlet for local teenagers.

“It’s lovely to see friendships forming between young people who might never have met otherwise,” she said. “They build confidence, make connections and really look forward to coming every week.”

Catherine’s energy doesn’t stop there. Through the Parents Association, she has helped expand after-school activities in Tunnyduff Hall, organising everything from art and drama to boxing, dance and yoga; while also working alongside CMETB and Cavan Arts on programmes for local children.

She also played a major role in reviving the Knockbride Festival, helping organise entertainment, logistics and fundraising for local schools.

“Without volunteers, you wouldn’t have festivals, youth clubs or community groups,” she said.

And the reward? Hearing her young son Joshua describe the Knockbride Festival as “the best day of my summer".
