Persevering with your goals
Persevering with your goals
Nora Connell was four years old when she first stepped foot into a Dojang. Now, 14 years later, Nora is the youngest and only female 4th Dan Black Belt Master in Taekwondo in Ireland. She practices with passion and teaches with joy. Taekwondo can be translated as the “way of the hand and foot” referring to the technique, but it also teaches the five tenets: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. “I aim to show all the students that confidence is having faith in yourself and persevering with your goals.”
Nora is proud to be considered a role model for other girls and she knows how the principles extend into everyday life. “Parents say since joining, their daughters have stood up for themselves.”
While self defence is an important aspect of Taekwondo, Nora’s emphasis lies on avoiding conflict altogether. “Knowing how to defend yourself is a good skill to have, but it is not an excuse to look for trouble,” she says.
Nora has competed for Ireland in kyrougi (sparring) and in poomsae (flowing technique) demonstrations, recently winning Gold in Poomsae at the Song Moo Kwan Irish Open. With the help of her parents Vincent and Gemma Connell, she has been running Lakelands Taekwondo in Bailieborough for the past six years. After her Leaving Cert this June, she will be taking a year to implement Taekwondo programmes in schools and community groups.
“I love sharing my knowledge with my students and take pride in seeing them achieve their goals.” Grateful for all the opportunities the sport has given her, she is astounded by the support of the students and their parents. “It is a privilege to be trusted to guide and coach all the members of my club."
