Official opening of N55 at Killydoon
The N55 Corduff to South of Killydoon Road Realignment Scheme (Section B) was officially opened today.
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien cut the ribbon on the project, marking the completion of the most recent phase of improvements to the strategically important N55 national secondary route in County Cavan.
The newly completed €31m section extends for approximately 3.7km between Ballytrust and Mullahoran, south of Killydoon. The scheme bypasses Killydoon Village, removing through traffic and improving road safety, journey reliability and overall driving conditions along this section of the N55.
The works included the construction of approximately 3.75km of new single carriageway, realigned junctions with improved sightlines, three new bridge structures over the River Erne, drainage infrastructure and associated ancillary works.
Within Killydoon, the project also incorporates traffic calming measures and a looped pedestrian walking facility, enhancing safety and the local environment for residents.
While today’s event marks the opening of the recently completed Section B, the scheme also complements the earlier Section A works (3.2km) completed in 2018.
In combination, the two sections provide a continuous improved route of approximately 6.9km.
Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien TD, said the scheme will "improve safety, journey times and reliability" for all road users.
"It also delivers real benefits for the local community, including the removal of through traffic from Killydoon. Projects like this are central to our continued investment in the national road network and to supporting connectivity and regional development across the country.”
Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr John Paul Feeley, said the project delivers a "safer and more consistent route for the approximately 5,000 vehicles using this section each day, including a high number of HGVs."
"At the same time, the reduction in volume of passing traffic from Killydoon and the provision of new pedestrian facilities have created a safer and more attractive environment for residents.”
Chief Executive of Cavan County Council, Mr Eoin Doyle, said the project reflects the "continued commitment of Cavan County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the Department of Transport to improving the national road network."
