Fencing and roads need repairing in Bailieborough
A stretch of collapsed fencing in Bailieborough was described as a “complete eyesore” by councillors at a recent MD meeting.
Cllrs Niall Smith (FF) and Adrian Rogers raised the issue in relation to fencing on the Shercock road out of Bailieborough, and on the bypass road to Kingscourt at the Tesco roundabout.
Cllr Smith told the meeting a section of this fence is leaning out on the footpath near the pedestrian crossing.
“People in town say it looks a complete mess,” Cllr Smith informed the meeting.
Meanwhile, Cllr Rogers added that the fence at Lisnalea Pumping Station on Pigeon’s Bray Road to the Highfield Estate is also in need of repair.
Executive Engineer Kenneth Lennon said the council intends to replace the fence on Shercock Road Roundabout in September or October of this year, while they said it “is our intention” to get the fence at Lisnalea Pumping Station repaired also. However, the fence at the Tesco roundabout was said to be owned privately, where they would “need to liaise” with the land owner.
“We need to give notice to the land owner fairly quick because it’s a desperate eyesore,” Cllr Smith responded.
Meanwhile, Cllr Rogers also raised the issue of overhanging trees on the Highfield Estate Road footpath. He said residents had to cut back some of these themselves in the past.
“We need to liaise on who owns those trees,” Mr Lennon said, while Cllr Rogers responded “the council.”
“Are you sure on that?” Director of Services Paddy Connaughton queried.
“Yes,” Cllr Rogers responded.
Meanwhile, Cllr Smith also raised the issue of green algae on footpaths, while he also asked what plans are in place to repair the road surface at the Lakeland Dairies junction to the East Knockbride and Shercock road. He said this road has a “large number of deep holes” and is in “bad repair”.
Cllr Smith said he has had “several calls” from drivers with punctures and damage to their vehicles.
Cllr Clifford Kelly supported the motion, describing how “a number of employees in Lakeland Dairies have complained about that piece of road.”
“It is in a bad way,” he added.
The motion also received support from Cllrs Stiofán Conaty and Adrian Rogers, who said he has received “loads of calls over the last year” on the issue.
Mr Lennon said while the area is “not currently in our roads programme” the “MD does acknowledge the poor condition” of the road and said the council intends to carry out localised re-surfacing which will be “done within the next couple of weeks”.
