Cruinniú na nÓg comes to Cavan and Monaghan
Ireland is the first, and only, country in the world to have a national day of free creativity for children and young people under 18 and this year Cruinniú na nÓg events are coming to Cavan and Monaghan again.
Happening on this Saturday, June 6, events will take place across both counties with young people invited to come along and participate in whatever it is they love doing. There will be several opportunities to join their favourite activities and also to try something completely new.
Here are some of the highlights of what's on in both counties:
CAVAN EVENTS
Make it Clay
WHERE: Belturbet Library and Trivia House
WHEN: 11am-12.30pm in Belturbet and 2-3.30pm in Swanlinbar
WHAT: Get stuck in and create your own Lilliputian character, one of the tiny figures who famously tied Gulliver to the ground. Using colourful, non-messy, air-drying clay, each piece will form part of a larger collaborative work. Characters will be added to a special Gulliver 300 commemorative installation to be exhibited in Belturbet Library. Bookings essential.
Glow in the dark paint night
WHERE: Ballyconnell Community Centre H14AY24
WHEN: 2pm
WHAT: Enjoy a step-by-step painting session with artist Laura Brady using glow paints, along with glow sticks and music. Booking via eventbrite.
Zine exhibition and workshop
WHERE: Johnston Central Library
WHEN: 10.15-11am
WHAT: The Youth Voices Zine project is a creative project where participants aged thirteen plus will design, write, illustrate and exhibit their individual and collaborative zines. View completed zines along with a workshop on the day to complete your own. No booking required.
Museum Takeover
WHERE: Cavan County Museum A82YP70.
WHEN: June 5 & 6 from 10am-3pm
WHAT: The History Club from St Clare's NS will take over the museum with guided tours, history displays and an art exhibition.
MONAGHAN EVENTS
Explore and Wonder Family Creativity Day
WHERE: Share Discovery Village BT920JZ
WHEN: 2-5pm
WHAT: A gentle, sensory-friendly creative day designed especially for children with additional needs and their families. Explore and Wonder offers a range of creative workshops including printing, bush craft, circus skills, messy play and much more. Limited places, booking required.
Lets drum workshop
WHERE: Foróige Youth Space, Monagan Peace Campus, H18RP20
WHEN: 12-1pm
WHAT: Hands on, interactive drumming workshop as Gaeilge. The workshop will introduce children to an array of percussion instruments form around the world. Each child will have a chance to play, with the workshop culminating in an end-of-workshop performance of the material covered. Limited space, booking essential.
Make Up Masters
WHERE: The Garage Theatre H18Y820
WHEN: 5-6.45pm or 7-8.45pm
WHAT: In these immersive evening workshops participants will dive into the art of Special Effects (SFX) make-up, exploring the techniques used in theatre, film and TV. Led by special SFX artist Elly May McCague. Limited space, booking required.
The legacy of Pat and Pete McKenna music workshops

WHAT: Young musicians are invited to celebrate North Monaghan's rich musical heritage through a series of workshops; Button Accordion workshop foundation/ intermediate with Daniel McKenna, Uillean Pipe workshop foundation/intermediate with Peter McKenna, Fiddle workshop intermediate/advanced with Sinead McKenna, Fiddle workshop foundation with Eugene McKenna.
