Sent for trial on drug and money laundering charges

Further charges have been brought against a Lithuanian national already accused of possessing suspected drugs for the purposes of sale or supply.

Aleksej Sergejev (49) with an address at Clare’s Court, Cavan Town, is accused of possessing cocaine and cannabis for sale or supply at his home address on February 3, 2026.

He is also charged in relation to an alleged earlier incident of possessing cannabis at Cathedral Road, Cavan Town, and with possessing cannabis for the purposes of sale or supply at Cavan Garda Station on the same date.

Mr Sergejev appeared before Cavan District Court via videolink from Dublin’s Wheatfield Prison. It was stated to Judge Gerard Jones that the case had been put back for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

They had since been received, and the direction is for the defendant to be sent forward for trial on indictment to the next sittings of Cavan Circuit Court.

Sergeant Damien Galligan indicated that “further” charges are pending.

When he was produced from prison to appear on May 21 before presiding Judge Raymond Finnegan, Aleksej Sergejev was further charged with being in possession of €12,150 cash contrary to section 7 of the Criminal Justice (money laundering and terrorist financing) Act 2010 at his home on February 3.

He was also charged with having cocaine and cannabis at his home on the same date with an aggregate market value of €13,000 or more.

When he first appeared in Cavan District Court on February 4, the day after his arrest, bail was refused to Mr Sergejev on the grounds of the seriousness of the offences, the potential for him to abscond, and because he was “caught red-handed”.

When he appeared from prison on May 21, Sergejev did not apply for bail and Judge Finnegan issued him with an alibi warning giving the defendant 14 days in which to provide in writing the details of any alibi he might wish to rely on when his case comes before the circuit court. An order was also made to make available all garda or other recordings in connection with the case to Sergejev’s defence team.

Judge Finnegan also assigned two barristers to the defendant “because of the severity of the charges”.

Aleksej Sergejev was then remanded in custody again to appear at the next sittings of Cavan Circuit Court beginning on June 23.
