Reds secure promotion with commanding win

ACFL Division 2

Killinkere 1-9

Cornafean 3-19

Cornafean completed an unbeaten league campaign and secured promotion to Division 2 for 2027 with an emphatic 16-point victory over Killinkere in Round 9 of the All-County Football League Division 3 on Saturday evening.

Martin Cahill's side arrived in Killinkere knowing a positive result would guarantee promotion and they left little doubt about the outcome from the opening exchanges. Two first-half goals laid the foundations before dominant second and third quarters effectively ended the contest, with Cornafean booking their place in the Division 3 League Final as well as securing a return to Division 2.

The visitors made the perfect start when James McGahern struck for goal inside the opening minute. Killinkere responded through Cian McGovern but Cornafean immediately regained the initiative and doubled their goal tally less than a minute later when Sean McFaul found the net.

McGovern added a second point for the home side on six minutes but it proved to be their final score of the opening half as Cornafean tightened their grip on proceedings.

Dean Kilkenny opened the visitors' run of scores with a point from play on eight minutes before wing-forward Jack Wharton landed a superb two-pointer. Shane Brady then got on the scoresheet as Cornafean's movement and pace began to trouble the Killinkere defence.

Midfielder Culann McSeain joined the scoring act shortly afterwards and when Kilkenny converted two frees during the second quarter, Cornafean had stretched their advantage to 11 points.

Killinkere struggled to make headway against a disciplined Cornafean rearguard and were guilty of missing a number of opportunities when they did manage to create openings. At the other end, Cornafean were patient in possession and consistently worked scoring chances. The visitors carried that 11-point advantage into the interval and there was little sign of a Killinkere revival after the restart.

Indeed, Cornafean immediately resumed where they had left off. Jack Wharton kicked his second two-pointer of the evening before Shane Brady added another score and Dean Kilkenny converted his third free. James McGahern then raised a white flag to complete a remarkable sequence of ten unanswered scores as Cornafean moved further clear.

Killinkere finally ended a scoring drought that had lasted over 40 minutes when Conall Mooney pointed eight minutes into the second half. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished.

Kilkenny responded with a fine point worked from a Cornafean kick-out before Brady added another. Peter Doyle then landed a two-pointer, ensuring all six members of Cornafean's starting forward line had contributed to the scoreboard.

Kilkenny added another free and the decisive blow arrived in the 46th minute when Sean McFaul struck for his second goal of the contest. The full-forward finished clinically to leave the score at 3-17 to 0-3 and put the result well beyond doubt.

To their credit, Killinkere continued to battle during the closing stages. Substitute Darren Smith converted a free before adding a point from play. Emmett Fitzsimons then got his name on the scoresheet before Alex Sweeney provided the highlight of the evening for the home support when he found the net.

Cian McGovern added another point for Killinkere while Fitzsimons struck twice more in injury time, but Cornafean remained firmly in control. Dean Kilkenny and McGovern exchanged scores late on while Sean McFaul added a '45' as Cornafean comfortably closed out the contest.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 3-19 to 1-9 victory for the visitors, who can now look forward to both a Division 3 League final appearance and life back in Division 2 next season after an impressive unbeaten campaign.
