Africa Day celebrated in Cavan
African culture, unity and heritage was celebrated at Africa Day in Cavan Town last weekend. With traditional food, dance, music and plenty of entertainment for kids and adults alike, one of the Organisers Zeinab Elmustafa said the day went “very well” with “positive spirit” all around. Organised at very short notice by Cavan County Local Development, people from Ireland, Libya, Sudan, Morocco, the Congo, Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe among others attended the event. There were foods for tasting from all over Africa, while the corner of the Cavan Gaels’ hall held an exhibit displaying traditional clothes, photos, history, and cultures within various African countries, which was admired by many.
Storytelling for children proved to be most popular, while children and families who were training on the pitch also came to experience the day.
“We had lots of locals come and that was amazing. They came by chance and they loved it, that's what made it such a success.
“The Cavan Gaels Club did not just host the event, they played a part in it,” Zeinab, who is an Intercultural Support Worker with CCLD, told the Celt.
“We held the event to show that we are here and to show our culture,” she said. Zeinab thanked everybody who came to help out on the day and also those who attended.
“They were helping in so many different ways, some of them didn't even get to enjoy the day because they were outside helping with car parking, so a big thanks to all of them.”
