Looking after your health

As we welcome the summer months, many of us are preparing for holidays abroad, family days out and spending more time enjoying the outdoors. While summer is a wonderful time of year, it also brings a number of seasonal health concerns that can often be avoided with a little forward planning.

One of the most important steps you can take to protect your health is to look after your skin. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, even on overcast days, can cause lasting damage and significantly increase the risk of skin cancer. I would encourage everyone to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30, or SPF 50 for children and those with fair or sensitive skin. Sunscreen should be applied generously before going outdoors and reapplied regularly throughout the day, particularly after swimming or excessive perspiration.

Wearing protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, together with seeking shade during the hottest part of the day, are equally important measures.

Before travelling, I also recommend preparing a basic travel health kit. Including your regular medications, pain relief, antihistamines, insect repellent, antiseptic cream, plasters, aftersun lotion and oral rehydration sachets can make managing minor illnesses much easier while away from home.

As pharmacists, we are often the first healthcare professionals that patients consult, and our role extends far beyond dispensing prescriptions.

Community pharmacies can now provide expert advice and treatment for a wide range of common conditions, allowing patients to access timely care without always requiring a GP appointment.

Through the Common Conditions Service, pharmacists can assess and provide treatment for a variety of everyday ailments, including allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, impetigo, cold sores, oral and vaginal thrush, shingles and cystitis , where clinically appropriate and with a consultation fee. We can also advise when further medical assessment is necessary.

At Jamesons Vital Pharmacy, our commitment is to provide accessible, professional healthcare within the local community.

Whether you require advice on sun protection, travel health, minor illnesses or your regular medications, our experienced team is always available to offer evidence-based guidance and personalised care. Early intervention, appropriate treatment and preventative measures can help ensure that you and your family enjoy a safe, healthy and enjoyable season.
