Finea to Abbeylara greenway progress

At the June meeting of the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District meeting, Cllr Alfie Devine sought an update on the Municipal District’s application for funding for the Finea to Abbeylara greenway /walkway. To this request, the response provided by officials stated that the District Office has advised that it has engaged with the stakeholders, such as the OPW, Coillte and Longford County Council.

It went on to state that a funding application has been submitted under the EU Just Transition START Scheme.

“Planning Permission is required to deliver this scheme, and this will be completed by the District in the coming months,” the response concluded.

Cllr Devine welcomed confirmation that a planning application is being advanced for the project. He remarked that works had been completed on the Longford side of the route and described the development as a positive step forward for the region.

Multy and Whitehall

Cllr Devine also referenced safety concerns at Whitehall National School, calling for a tabletop ramp at the location following reports of accidents in the area.

A further request by Cllr Devine related to Multyfarnham which also, he said, is in need of safety measures.

In response, officials confirmed that two ramps are due to be installed on the western approach roads to Multyfarnham in Quarter 3 of 2026, as part of ongoing traffic calming works across the district.

Lake signs

At the same meeting, Cllr Devine asked that the district consider erecting signage at the three access points to Lough Derravaragh – Donore, Faughalstown and Gartlandstown – outlining the rules governing use of the lake.

He suggested these be similar to signage erected at Lough Lene.

The official written response from the district stated that the existing signage would be examined to ensure consistency with other lakeshores.

“Following this review, we will erect signs if required,” the response concluded.
