Gardaí probe alleged hit and run in Ballyduff
A JUVENILE, arrested over a hit-and-run incident in Ballyjamesduff involving a car and an e-scooter, has been released without charge, the Celt can reveal.
Gardaí confirmed that a collision involving a car and an e-scooter occurred at around 5:30pm last Tuesday, July 21, in Ballyjamesduff.
The e-scooter rider, a woman in her 20s, was brought to Cavan General Hospital by ambulance for “serious” but non-life-threatening injuries.
“The driver of the car failed to remain at the scene,” gardaí told the Celt and a juvenile male aged in his late teens was arrested and detained at a garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He was later released without charge while gardaí prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Since the incident last Tuesday, July 21, a video appearing to show a female being dragged under a car has been circulated widely online.
The shocking video, which is taken from a first-floor vantage point on a building on Stradone Street, has been viewed by The Anglo-Celt. In the footage, which seems to have been taken from a camera pointing at the area known as the New Inns Road junction, a black saloon car can be seen approaching the crossroads from the Lower Dublin Road and a female being dragged on her back underneath.
It’s understood that the vehicle, which was travelling from the Cavan Road direction, collided with the person on Lower Dublin Street. The alleged point of impact wasn’t covered by the camera.
As the car slows down at the junction, the front passenger wheel of the vehicle drives over the person on the ground before the vehicle comes to a complete stop.
Around a dozen people in the vicinity, including other motorists and pedestrians, immediately run to the aid of the woman under the car, to free her. As concerned members of the public were gathered around the front of the vehicle and tending to the injured woman, footage shows the driver taking off at speed, driving straight through the junction along Upper Dublin Street and out the Virginia Road.
Some men, who had been assisting at the scene, were caught unawares and thrown back from the black saloon as it sped off.
Ballyjamesduff Councillor Trevor Smith (FG) said he is aware of the incident and wanted to praise the people who were in the vicinity at the time for their “quick response to help out”.
“I hope and pray the injured person makes a full recovery,” Cllr Smith also said.
Fatality in Navan
Meanwhile, in Navan, a young man was killed when his e-scooter collided with a taxi in the early hours of Sunday, July 26. The young Moldovan man died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident on the Kentstown Road in Navan in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The man, who was in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the tragic incident as they also try to contact the man’s relatives in Moldova because he had no relatives in Ireland and had been living in the Johnstown area for only a short time.
Gardaí in Navan are appealing to anyone who may have dash cam footage to come forward.
