Donegal GAA great named as N3 crash victim to accident.

All-Ireland winning Donegal footballer James McHugh has been named as the man who died following a serious two-vehicle collision on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan yesterday (Monday).

The 62-year-old Kilcar native was driving a car which collided with a van at Drummallaght, near New Inns, shortly before 2pm.

Mr McHugh was a member of Donegal's historic 1992 All-Ireland winning team and was awarded an All Star following that landmark season. He also enjoyed considerable success with his club, Kilcar, and represented Donegal at senior level between 1990 and 1996.

He was the brother of former Cavan manager and fellow 1992 All-Ireland winner Martin McHugh.

His wife, Noreen, who was a passenger in the car, remains in critical condition in hospital after being airlifted to Beaumont Hospital.

The male driver of the van, aged in his 50s, was taken to Cavan General Hospital with minor injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who travelled on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan between 1pm and 2pm on Monday.
