Cavan submits €7.3M roads funding claim

Cavan County Council has submitted a claim for €7.285 million in roads funding.

Cavan was listed as having drawn down nothing in the Department of Transport's figures for 2026 under the Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme.

However, a council spokesperson has clarified the situation: “Since these figures were released in Dáil Éireann in late July, Cavan County Council has submitted a claim for €7.285M in respect of its Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme.”

They added: “The Council's roads programme has been ongoing throughout, and there has been no impact on the progress of the roads programme as a result of the timing of the drawdown.”

In neighbouring Monaghan, the council there has drawn down €2.403M to date under the programme.

That was higher than the amounts recorded for Louth, at €1.819M, and Meath, at €2.007M, but below Leitrim, which had drawn down €3.007M.

Overall, local authorities had drawn down almost €190M under the Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme in 2026 at the time the figures were compiled.

Responsibility for regional and local roads rests with the individual local authorities. Councils fund the maintenance and improvement of these roads from their own resources, supplemented by State grants.

Responsibility for the national roads programme is different, with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) overseeing the operation and management of individual national roads in conjunction with the local authorities concerned.
