Garland glory as Donaghmoyne down Killanny

David Garland kicked 1-11 for Donaghmoyne on Sunday afternoon, as they used a strong second-half breeze to blow by Killanny in the Intermediate Football Championship.

The Fontenoy's trailed by a point at the break, but with a stiff wind that grew stronger in the second half pulled away for a comfortable nine-point victory.

Killanny were a much-changed side from the league final, missing key man Eddie Walsh and centre-back Tomás Quinn, who suffered an injury in the decider.

Still, the League champions started the game brightly, with corner-forward partners Daniel Leegan and Conor Grimes both scoring two-pointers with their first shots.

Not to be outdone, Garland introduced himself to proceedings with a two-point spinner, against the wind, as Donaghmoyne trailed by two.

With the conditions in their favour, Killanny did try and force the issue in the first half, with the lively John Gartland causing Donaghmoyne problems roaming between midfield and full-forward. Conor Burns and Killian Collins also showed well for the Geraldines, scoring a point apiece in the opening stages.
