Monaghan woman and husband found dead at Spanish holiday villa

A WOMAN from Castleblayney and her husband have been found dead in a jacuzzi at their holiday villa in Spain.

The couple aged 45 and 50 were found by their two teenage children on Tuesday.

The discovery was made at a residential estate called Cap Blanc in Cullera, a town about 25 miles south of the city of Valencia.

Police are investigating whether the pair were the victims of foul play, although the possibility they suffered an accident while they were in the Jacuzzi has not been ruled out.

The Anglo-Celt understands some of the woman’s relatives from Monaghan have flown to Spain to be with the couple’s children.

The Department of Foreign Affairs have confirmed to various media that they are providing consular assistance in the case of one Irish citizen concerned.

Castleblayney councillor Paul Gibbons confirmed to the Celt that the deceased woman is from the Drumhowan area and described her family as “very, very well-respected” in the local GAA and arts communities.

“I would like to offer my sympathy and all my support to the family at this time,” Cllr Gibbons told the Celt.

“There is uncertainty around the terrible incident at this time but one would hope that it is a sad accident rather than anything more tragic,” the Sinn Féin rep added.
