Authorities name the Monaghan woman who died in Spain

The woman in her 50s who died tragically in Spain was a mother and wife

THE woman from Castleblayney who tragically died in a jacuzzi in Spain earlier this week has been named as Thomasina McArdle.

Ms McArdle and her husband, New Zealander, Patrick Tobin, passed away on Tuesday in what Spanish police are describing as a possible 'chain reaction' accident.

Reports from Spain today say foul play is not suspected in the tragic case.

The couple’s teenage children discovered their parents deceased in the jacuzzi at their apartment in Cullera just south of the city of Valencia in eastern Spain on Tuesday.

Relatives from Monaghan flew to Spain to be with the children after learning of the double tragedy.

The arts and GAA communities in Monaghan, as well as the wider Castleblayney community, will mourn the death of the mother and wife who has lived in London for the past 20 years where she worked as a chartered quantity surveyor.

Thomasina McArdle (51) is the daughter of Tommy McArdle, a well-known playwright from Drumhowan who, together with his identical twin brother, John co-founded the the Ballintra Players drama group in Monaghan in the 1960s.

Thomasina's brother, John, is the current assistant treasurer of the Monaghan GAA County Board.

No funeral arrangements have been announced for the Monaghan woman and her husband at this time.
