New family support group for those affected by addiction to launch in Monaghan

A new weekly peer support group for family members and friends affected by a loved one's addiction will begin in Monaghan Town next week.

The Family Addiction Support Network (FASN), which provides support services to families impacted by addiction and substance misuse, has announced the launch of a new daytime Family Peer Support Group in Monaghan.

The free and confidential group will begin on Tuesday, September 8, and will meet weekly from 11am to 12.30pm at FASN's premises on Park Street, Monaghan Town (H18 CK15).

Open to anyone affected by another person's addiction or substance misuse, the group aims to provide a supportive space where people can connect with others who have shared experiences, received encouragement and develop healthier coping strategies.

FASN said addiction can have a profound effect on families, with parents, partners, siblings, children and friends often experiencing prolonged periods of worry, uncertainty and stress.

Cindy Barry, Cavan and Monaghan Family Support Worker with FASN, said it was important for families to know support is available.

"One of the most important messages we want families to hear is that they do not have to face the impact of addiction alone. Family members can spend a huge amount of time worrying about the person they love and trying to help them, sometimes to the point where their own wellbeing becomes lost in everything that is happening."

She said peer support can help people feel less isolated while refocusing attention on their own wellbeing.

"Peer support gives people an opportunity to meet others who genuinely understand some of those experiences. It can help reduce that sense of isolation and give family members a space to begin focusing on their own coping and wellbeing as well."

FASN stressed that family members do not need to wait until a loved one enters treatment, recovery or stops using substances before seeking support for themselves.

The organisation already facilitates family peer support groups across the North East, including evening groups in Cavan, Castleblayney, Drogheda, Navan and Dundalk. The new Monaghan service is intended to provide an additional option for those who may find evening attendance difficult.
