€150k windfall for central Cavan quarter plan

Regeneration boost

Major Government investment has been announced to facilitate plans to redevelop the culturally significant River Mill Quarter of Cavan Town.

Containing a mix of streets, riverfront spaces, historic buildings, pedestrian routes and underused sites- the ambition is to create an opportunity to reconnect parts of the town centre and unlock the potential of an area long seen as a distinctive part of Cavan's urban fabric.

The adjacent Abbeylands Masterplan, already well underway, features prominently around the quarter, bordering Bridge Street, which includes a narrow pathway along the walled riverbank, a pedestrian bridge connecting River Street with the Lifeforce Mill, and a series of passageway entrances leading from the street frontage.

Fine Gael Senator Joe O’Reilly has welcomed the announcement, saying the investment could help reshape a key section of Cavan Town and create more attractive spaces for residents, visitors and businesses.

“This funding is a huge boost to Cavan Town,” Senator O’Reilly said, highlighting the importance of creating a town centre where people can shop, meet friends and family and enjoy the daily activity of the town.

The investment is being delivered as part of a wider Government drive supporting initiatives such as Town Centre First, with funding intended to focus on areas in greatest need and help breathe new life into urban centres.

Sen O’Reilly said the investment would also help tackle vacant and underused sites while creating spaces that are “safe and attractive” for people of all generations, and paid tribute to Cavan County Council for its work in putting forward submissions, as well as local community groups and social enterprises involved in developing projects aimed at delivering benefits for the wider community.

“This funding will drive economic growth, increase town footfall, combat dereliction, develop community and civic infrastructure,” he said.
