Monaghan Senior women’s had a great start to their league campaign last weekend, with a 61-12 victory over QUB2s on Sunday home at IJM park, Monaghan.

It was the first game of the season, and Monaghan fielded a side made up of many played who were playing rugby for the first time.

Nonetheless, the level of skill and effort on display was top notch.

The home side got off to the perfect start, and ran in some excellent tries, running some from deep with excellent line breaks, while also dominating the set piece exchanges.

Support play off runners and set plays also helped Monaghan to build a lead early in the game, which they held onto until the final whistle.

At the end of an entertaining first half, Monaghan led 36-7.

The home side ran the bench in the second half, which gave Queens an opportunity to get back into the game.

The Belfast side scored a try right from the restart and had a period of dominance in the third quarter.

However, Monaghan showed great spirit in defence, constantly disrupting Queens’ attacks with some top class tackling and scramble defence.

While it is just the opening round of a long season, the team were satisfied to get off to a winning start, particularly for the players who were getting their first taste of competitive rugby.
