Stronger funding commitment needed on CAP says Cllr

Fianna Fáil Councillor Áine Smith will highlight the importance of adequate funding for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), a vital source of financial support for farmers throughout rural Ireland, when Cavan County Council sits next week, November 9.

The debate becomes particularly important as negotiations continue over the EU's 2028–2034 budget.

The European Commission's proposals have raised concerns about a potential reduction in Ireland's agricultural funding. The Irish Farmers' Association estimates that the proposed allocation could mean a reduction of approximately €2.54 billion for Ireland over the period.

Councillor Smith's motion looks to ensure that the Government strongly defends agricultural funding at European level. Adequate CAP resources are essential not only for farmers but also for food security, environmental protection, local employment and the economic sustainability of communities across Cavan.
