The Co Cavan team was narrowly defeated by Clontarf GC, who went on to beat the host club Monkstown in the final on Saturday September 20. Although the Cavan side lost 4-1, the scoreline failed to tell the story of what was a very tight encounter throughout. All matches went down to the wire and with Clontarf GC claiming victory in the third game on the 20th hole, they moved into an unassailable lead and the remaining two matches were halved. Belturbet Ladies Golf Club Conquer Cancer Competition continues for October. Shamrocks Golf Society The monkey has been lifted off Gavin Mackey"s golf after 11 years of toil when he romped home with Chris Lokko"s Captain"s Prize on Saturday. Gavin"s meticulous preparation with a practice round in Murvagh paid dividends when he scored 38pts over the beautifully presented Slieve Russell course. His prize, a uniquely mounted Bobby Locke putter, was really admired by all competitors and Gavin received an escort home to ensure it wasn"t taken from him. Second place was filled by Andy Coleman with 35pts who is showing no signs of fatigue from his new paternal duties. Sean McCabe representing the Royal County finished in third place and sang his version of "Beautiful Meath" to a chorus of Ryder style boos. Michael Farrell claimed the high handicap prize and vowed that all outings should be in the Russell. Best newcomer was Stephen Blackburn and his creditable score of 28pts will improve from his rescue prize. The much sought after past captain"s prize was won by Seamus Sheridan with Declan O"Brien winning the visitor"s section on an excellent 35pts. To great cheers Patrick Maguire squeezed past his arch rival Gerry Eagleton to win the back nine with Eddie Madden collecting the front nine. Fresh from his aerial exploits of the previous weekend Terry Smith showed no signs of nerves to shoot nearest the pin. Not content with second place, Andy Coleman took home the longest drive to echoes of "give it back, give it back" - but he stood firm. The day ended with the announcement of the elevation of Eddie Madden to Captaincy in 2009 to warm applause and congratulatory handshakes. Final numbers for this weekend"s trip to Woodenbridge and Blainroe must be given to the secretary by the latest on Wednesday.
