Man dies in crash near Arvagh

A young man has died following a crash near Arvagh overnight.

The fatal traffic collision occurred shortly before 2am where the male, aged in his 30s, was seriously injured when his car, a black Ford Focus, left the road and struck a ditch. The car had been travelling on the R198 at Moyne, on the Longford of the Cavan-Longford county border. It’s understood he was travelling from Drumlish in the direction of Arvagh when the collision occurred.

Emergency services called provided urgent medical treatment at the scene to the man who was subsequently removed to Cavan General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

He was the sole occupant of the car.

The stretch of road at the crash site remains closed to traffic this morning and local diversions are in place.

An examination of the car and scene will be carried out by Garda forensic collision investigators later today, and a report will be prepared for the local Coroner.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Granard Garda Station on 043-6687660 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

It is the second and third death on local roads in almost as many weeks following a crash which claimed the life of Eamon Mulcachy, formerly Cherrymount, Cavan Town, when the car he was travelling in collided with a lorry at Cloverhill on December 7 last.

More recently, Yvonne Ward from Roscommon died after the car she was travelling in also collided with a lorry at Corduff, on the N55 outside Ballinagh, four days before Christmas, December 21.
