Clones Golf Club Course stands up to Battering The optimists amongst us headed out to the golf club on Saturday last in the hope that the weather men had got their predictions of a severe weather warning wrong. Sadly it couldn"t have been more accurate and Clones was closed whilst the optimists watched from the comfort of the clubhouse, the course suffer the torrential downpours. Most of the greens were awash and the 9th fairway actually had a river running across it. Remarkably the course re-opened on Sunday morning and was in fine shape with only the debris left behind by the torrent of the previous days water giving away the severity of the onslaught, but the course in Clones stood the test and everyone that played on Sunday marvelled at how dry the course was. President"s Prize President Mr. Paul Flynn was delighted to accomodate all the GAA football fans by re-scheduling the date on which his prize was to be competed for and finally it took place on Sunday 10th August. The result was worth waiting for as the overall winner Andrew McMahon carded a magnificent score of 63 nett. The men"s prize winners were 1st Niall Murphy with 66 nett, 2nd Marty Carey 69 nett and the gross went to Seamus Keenan. The ladies prize winners were kathleen Leonard 71 nett. Kathleen 'my putter"s hot' Leonard recenlty rediscovered her form after having her confidence restored following a fine victory in the matchplay trophy. Gemma McMahon having recently had her first win was delighted to accept 2nd place with 73 nett and also pleased that her handicap is now down to 32. Catherine Farrell won the gross. Captain"s Prize Gentlemen you only have a few more days to get your game in shape for the biggie, yes it"s Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick"s Captain"s Prize which takes place on Saturday 30th August. One such club was kindly handed in for the rightful owner to collect and sadly when he went to collect it, it was missing. Please check your golf bags. There are also many club head covers behind the bar so if you are missing any equipment please check with Mary behind the bar as she is drowning in golf equipment! Shamrocks Golf Society Thirty five mates ignored the soft conditions of Saturday week last to fight for the inaugural Larry Farrell Trophy. Showing a return to form Terry Smith, a neighbour, became the first winner on 35 pts. His victory speech highlighted his delight but also his humility to be the first name on the scroll of honour. To mark Larry"s special place in the society the trophy was presented back to him and his family. This presentation to "Captain" Larry revived many memories and stories of his great time aboard the famous QE2. The unique piece consisted of a polished metal part of the QE2 hull cradled in a decorative timber base. Chris Lokko, Captain of the Shamrocks, who planned the making and design of the piece presented the trophy to Larry to a rousing reception tinged with real emotion. Second place was taken by Ronan O"Grady who blasted his way around Rossmore with many believing his new power caddy could have difficulty keeping up with him. The hot man Brian O"Callaghan finished a close third of his seven handicap and his time on the Australia circuit looked to have been well spent. There was real delight when Pat Clarke came to winning podium after winning his first prize in the high handicap section. His short few words stated "the best is yet to come". Was this a warning shot to all hoping to capture the Captain"s prize in Moyvalley on Saturday, 6th September? Final message to members, don"t forget the call to the Garden of Ireland in October when the gem Woodenbridge will form the high point of the weekend away. Golf lessons continue with Joe Frawley on Thursdays and with Cathal Barry on Thursday evenings. Keep up the good work. A Big Thanks to all helpers at the BBQ, too numerous to mention. Hard luck to our Boys who were beaten by Clones in the Semi final of the Norman Cinnamond Cup last week. It was a tough fight to the end and the boys did us proud. Our Student girls, Roisin Brady and Amy Boylan are travelling to Blackrock to Leslie Waller as part of the Leinster Girls Coaching and are benefitting well from their lessons. Mannon Castle Ladies This week we had the postponed Captain"s Prize to the Ladies. Thankfully the rain stayed away and we all got playing the full 18 holes. The previous week was cancelled after the torrential rain that fell on the Wednesday morning and some, including this writer, got completely soaked, being caught on the 7th hole. The rain on that day was so heavy that the greens became flooded before we had played another two holes. As a consequence it was decided by the Club to close the course for the rest of that day, hence the postponement. The winners are as follows: Mary McNamee, true to her great recent form, returned a score of 66 well ahead of the rest of the field; Philomena Rogers came second with a score of 72, just beating Mary Cassidy into third on the breakdown. Well played ladies and congratulations. Some of us would have been in the reckoning if stupid mistakes, like hitting another player"s ball with their own while on the green and incurring a two shot penalty!! ( I must learn to concentrate someday and pay attention to what"s going on, right Sadie?) Last Monday our AA Foursomes Team, captained by Jo Morris, had their first outing in their semi-finals against Rathfarmham, played in Mannan. As with all these tournaments, the competition becomes stiffer the further along we get, and indeed the opposition were tough. Thankfully we came away with one and a half matches, which leaves us needing to win two matches away. A big ask, however, having played the practice round this weekend in Rathfarnham, our ladies are very upbeat and looking forward to their meeting on Thursday 21st August. Best of luck ladies, and as always we are all rooting for you. This weekend was our Captain Patrick Noel"s prize, the pinnacle of the golfing calender. However the weather was so bad all week, culminating with Saturday"s torrential rain, it was feared that this competition, like so many others this year would also have to be cancelled. However the gods were kind to Patrick Noel and indeed all the men who had qualified to play and amazingly the rain stopped to allow the competition go ahead. It is a tribute to all in Mannan and the course committee, that the course was playable, and indeed all the money that has been spent on the drainage system over the years has proved a great investment. We are very lucky that the course has held up so well as so many courses in the North East have been closed all week due to the wet conditions. Congratulations to Lenny McKittrick, the winner of this year"s Captain"s Prize. A "bright spark" in the middle of this very gloomy summer!
