THE SHAMROCK GOLF
SOCIETY
We are on the road again to enjoy the stunning parkland of Portarlington Golf Club this Saturday. From all accounts this gem recognised as one of the most sylvan in Ireland is a must. Spanish aficionados have been installed as warm favourites after a week long sojourn in Marbella. This is last chance saloon time for all those prominent members who failed to make the match play the first day. Tee off is at 10 a.m. so an early alarm call is required for all members travelling. The best route is via Tullamore on to Mountmelllick and to the course at Garryhinch on the Offaly boarder. Suggestion is to leave close to 7 a.m. to allow you to unwind with coffee and toast before tackling the beauty. Our weekend away in early October requires numbers so the hard question needs to be asked before Saturday preferably not in a Spanish accent. The answer could be “Non avere possibilitá Uomo”.

Open Weekend Results – The 3-day open stableford competition held over the Bank Holiday weekend was a great success and attracted visitors from many clubs as well as players from the host club in a bid to win the beautiful furniture sponsored by Bank of Ireland (New Ireland) Assurance. Fionnuala McKenna, Lady Captain's daughter, very kindly approached her employers to secure the sponsorship and Clones Ladies Club is grateful for her efforts.
The winner of the ladies competition with 32 points was Anne McCarthy, Anne was delighted to win as she believed her score would not be enough. In second spot, was Mary McGuigan, (30 points). Just pipped into third spot on a count-back was Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna.
The men's competition produced some fantastic scores and claiming first spot was Gary Sexton with a fine score of 42 points. In second place also with 42 points was Brendan Gilroy and third went to Andrew McMahon with 40 points.
Granard Cup Results – The ladies played in the Granard Cup Foursomes last Thursday and most found it tough and that the course would not give up a score.

3 T's on Thursday – The ladies compete in the Turning The Tide against Suicide charity stableford event this coming (Thursday) 15th May and we urge everyone to support this worthy cause. Ladies
The fine weather this past week or so has meant that the numbers of ladies coming out to play in competition has increased greatly. The golf is also good and the competition very keen. This week was the Rose Bowl sponsored by G & K Cumiskey and 48 ladies participated. Imelda Hanratty came first with 40 points; second Jackie Edwards with 39 just beating Mary Cassidy on the breakdown.
The course is playing very well and as one of the ladies said 'it was like playing in the Algarve'.
A great compliment to the club! Unfortunately the only rain this week came on Friday evening, putting a slight damper on the first of the mixed scrambles to be run in the club. However 22 turned out in spite of the rain. Hopefully the next one will be held in fine weather..
The club classic is being held on the week ending 24/25th May and will also be held on Wednesday 21st May. The time sheet is in the club so get your names down now. This is an open competition and is also a repeater - details in the clubhouse. Finally the tournament season is well under way and this week the ladies are playing in three different events, so best of luck to those who are participating.

Blacklion Golf Club
There was more Ulster Cup disappointment on Saturday last when the four-ball team narrowly failed to make the third round, playing against Massarene. Captain Paddy Maguire and partner Danny McGovern took maximum points from both legs, as did the pairing of Paul Curran and Frank Martin, but it was in vain as the team missed out by a half point.
The Ladies Daily Mail team also met with defeat, this time against local rivals Castle Hume, though the Daily Mail foursomes' team progressed to the fourth round with a fine win over Bundoran.
Glass Case 4 was a keenly-fought affair. Eugene Corrigan's forty points was just overtaken by Aiden Curry when he chipped in at the last for a par.
Seamus Cullen fired an impressive two over par gross to take third, while Paul McKenna claimed the Gross prize with a 79.
Glass Case 5 took place last week in glorious conditions. Tommy O'Connor shot a 66 but was narrowly beaten by Liam McMorrow, who went one shot lower.
Glenfarne's Joe Keaney was a shot further back in third, with Paul McKenna again taking the Gross prize.
The first Ladies Open Day of the year takes place on the 7th June, with a timesheet in operation. The Ladies beginners' nights are proving to be a great success, and a three-hole competition will be run off on a Thursday night.
