The ladies competed for Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick"s Captains Prize last Thursday in almost perfect conditions. There was a good turnout for this pre-drawn GOY stroke competition and expectations were high but alas the harder we tried the worse the golf got except for a couple of ladies that is, Mary O"Toole (31) who played in the last group of the day carded a 72 nett to claim first prize. Mary played steady golf, nothing spectacular until the par 3, 10th when she chipped into the hole from well off the green. Thankfully the ball hit the flag and dropped straight into the hole otherwise it was heading for the bunker. Mary"s short game was her redeemer and she managed to sink some impressive putts In second spot a lady who is on a bit of a roll at the moment, Kathleen Leonard who had an unexpected win in the mixed foursomes alongside Canon Macartan McQuaid in a round in which they were blessed and again Kathleen"s putter was the hot club in the bag! Kathleen started her round on Thursday very steadily and then made the mistake of counting up her score on the 16th and realising she was going well, proceeded to finish 7,6! Kathleen (31) finished with a nett 76 beating several others on a countback. The gross winner was Mary Trant 94. The learner ladies have just one more Wednesday to try their hand at golf. Wednesday 3rd September is the last coaching session of the season and there will be a small competition for the learner ladies. Prize for everyone!
