The Mass Rock to premiere at Ramor Theatre
The Mass Rock tells the story of Mother Agnes, a Carmalite nun in an ailing island community, who can no longer pray. What happened at the Mass rock that now haunts her? Who can free her of these memories? What results is a haunting drama about love, loss, unravelling stoic piety and the spiritual healing that can come from the sinful world outside the convent. Set between a rock and a hard place, The Mass Rock is a touching and challenging tale of symbiotic sisterhood, human co-dependence, clandestine faith healing, spiritual subsistence, escapism, and vocations lost and found. The press for the play claims: "Throughout, this dynamic new drama bravely delves into the dark recesses of religious life in a Ireland to explore the power of belief in a lie whilst also examining the insatiable human need for absolute creeds, touchstone faiths and alternative communions and unconventional messiahs. "The forceful combination of these themes and their subversive on-stage treatment results in a darkly powerful amalgam of faith and fatalism, tradition and modernity, entrapment and release, which ensure that The Mass Rock is a genuine must see production for all those with an interest in new Irish theatre and old Irish life."
