Johnston in goal-scoring form but yet to re-sign for the Gaels

Seanie Johnston was back on home soil playing, and even scoring, for Cavan last night.  However, as Cavan Gaels open their Senior Championship campaign at Lacken in Breffni Park tomorrow (Friday, August 9), the Celt can confirm that he has yet to submit a transfer request.

His goal-scoring heroics last night came in a pre-season friendly for local soccer team Cavan Town AFC. Johnston scored in a two-all draw against an Enniskillen outfit. Incidentally his former-Gaels teammate also plays for Cavan Town AFC.

Cavan Gaels will be quietly confident that they will be able to negotiate the early rounds of the club championship without the star forward. Therefore, he may yet become available to play for the Gaels in the business-end of the championship.

Speculation that Johnston would make a return to his home club intensified after he reportedly indicated that he would not be making himself available for Kildare club St Kevin’s, which would have made him eligible for the Lilywhites next year.

However Johnston’s has been unable to claim a regular place in Kildare’s starting line-up. His appearances in the Lilywhites’ disappointing All-Ireland campaign have been mostly as a substitute.

Backing

The Celt reported earlier this week that his friend, Cian Mackey, speaking after winning his Player of the Month award for July had given his backing for Johnston to line out for Cavan’s inter-county team.

“I played with Jelly since our underage days and he is a good friend of mine,” Mackey said.
“The door is open for Seanie to come back, from what Terry [Hyland] has been saying. It’s up to Seanie to get back playing with his club and he has to earn his place back in the squad.
“Seanie is a top-notch footballer and I’m sure if he is playing good football he will get the call-up.”
