Woman rescued from burning home
A Cavan Town woman was rescued through a back bedroom window of her burning home at 5 o’clock on Sunday evening by members of Cavan Fire Brigade.
It is understood that the alarm was raised when smoke was spotted coming from the house and members of Cavan gardai and fire brigades from Cavan Town and Belturbet raced to the scene. An ambulance was also called and the resident of the house at Kilnavara Crescent was taken to Cavan General Hospital.
A Garda spokesperson at Cavan Garda Station said a lady was suffering from smoke inhalation and burns to her feet.
The fire appears to have taken hold in the ground floor living area and then the stairway.
The spokesperson said the woman was on her own in the house. Gardai were first on the scene, followed quickly by the fire units and the ambulance.
The gardai and the neighbours immediately set about endeavouring to get the woman out of the house, but could not get access to the house from the front of the house. “They had a ladder out, but were just beaten back with the smoke”, said the spokesperson.
The firemen had to break a rear second-floor bedroom window with an axe in order to gain access to the woman.
The spokesperson said the last update they had from the hospital was on Monday evening at 7pm and the lady was in coronary care at that stage but was making good progress.
The technical examination was carried out on the scene by gardai from Cavan. The Chief Fire Officer in Cavan Noel Burke thanked all those who helped firemen at the scene, including gardai, the ambulance crew and the neighbours.
