'Black Lives Matter' protest planned for Cavan
A peaceful anti-racism demonstration, inspired by the 'Black Lives Matter' actions springing up globally, is set to take place in Cavan at the weekend.
To be held in solidarity with the human rights protests taking place around the USA following the death of George Floyd during an arrest by police officers in Minneapolis last week, the protest will be staged at the Courthouse in Cavan Town on Saturday, June 6, starting at 3pm.
His death and the treatment of black people by law enforcement in the USA has sparked rioting across the country.
Thousands of people meanwhile turned out to join a protest last Monday at the US Embassy in Dublin.
'Racism is not America's problem', say organisers of the proposed event.
In an attempt to manage proceedings in line with current Covid-19 health restrictions, organisers have informed those planning on attending that wearing PPE masks is “mandatory”.
It comes after the Irish Council for Civil Liberties said organisers of any demonstrations must make sure public health advice is followed.
'Stand in solidarity with the black community,' the Cavan demonstration poster states.
A similar anti-racism demonstration is set to be held in neighbouring Monaghan and Leitrim also.
The events in neighbouring counties also hope to highlight issues surrounding Direct Provision in Ireland.
Some Black Lives Matter protests due to take place in both Cork and Dublin were called off due to fears that organisers may face prosecution.
