St. Bricin's are going for qualifications in kayaking, canoeing and water safety at Carratraw Canoe Centre.

It’s a sporting life at St. Bricin’s

The weather maybe getting a chilly but that hasn't stopped the pupils of St. Bricin's continuing their water sports training every Friday as they aim for qualifications in kayaking, canoeing and water safety. Large numbers ranging from first to fifth year have been at Carratraw Canoe Centre in Butlersbridge, highlighting the excellent teaching available. The boys and girls basketball teams have been making great strides on the court recently. Under the guidance of Mr. Reynolds and Ms Farrelly both have played a number of challenge games and are training hard, in anticipation of the beginning of their competitions. The U14 boys football team had an excellent victory over St. Clare's, Ballyjamesduff on the new 3G pitch in Breffni Park recently. The U16 girls were unlucky to lose their shield final but put in a valiant display. Well done to the U14 girls, who put in an excellent display in the Tom Dowd Memorial Blitz at Breffni Park. Best of luck to all our teams who continue to compete and are training regularly under the guidance of Ms Farrelly and Mr. Smith. St. Bricin's camogie team are continuing training with Ms Fay in preparation for the Div.2 league. The girls started by defeating St. Mogue's, Bawnboy and will play St. Louis, Carrickmacross in the coming weeks. For the first time in their history St. Bricin's have entered league and cup competitions at both U14 and U16 grades. At present both squads are training intensively with Mr. Smith and are looking forward to the beginning of their competitions. Well done to our first year boys who were runners-up in the county futsal competition in Breifne College. St. Bricin's second year Ross Delaney was selected to train at the Irish Elite swimming camp in Tenerife over the mid-term break, in recognition of his excellent performances at county and provincial level – he is sure to benefit from the expert training received. Enrolment night A Vibrant School With Vision was the theme as St. Bricin's College, Belturbet opened its doors to the parents of fifth and sixth class pupils just before the Halloween break in what turned out to be a successful and enjoyable enrolment evening. The Leaving Certificate peer mentors and prefects were perfect hosts in escorting and directing the large flow of parents around the various classrooms. Each subject department had its own information stand where parents and pupils could engage and participate in activities that gave a flavour of the subject. As ever, the ICT suite and science lab were popular and pupils had the chance to conduct experiments. All the practical rooms had exciting student demonstrations and the art and sport displays also attracted the crowds. Many of the parents commented on the way technology was utilised in every classroom to bring the subject to life and also how the students involved in the demonstrations were so ICT literate. Most popular of all perhaps was the modern languages department, where visitors enjoyed tasty French cakes and biscuits. The following day St. Bricin's students took part in a worldwide non-uniform day on behalf of UNICEF in a charity event that sought to set a new world record. We are not sure if the record was set but we certainly had fun in the attempt...
