The site of the new SRF plant at Quinn Cement in Ballyconnell, marked off ahead of works to take place there in the coming weeks

Work to start on €16m SRF investment at Quinn Cement

Quinn Cement, a subsidiary of Aventas Group, is pleased to announce the appointment of PJ Carey Contractors Ltd as main contractor to the Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) project at its Ballyconnell cement works in Co. Cavan. The commencement of the construction phase is a key milestone in the €16m investment, which will allow the cement plant to use alternative fuels thereby reducing the reliance on coal.  The project will create 100 jobs during construction and is scheduled to complete in summer 2014.

The use of SRF as an alternative fuel is long established within the cement industry. SRF is a sustainable source of renewable energy produced by extracting the energy rich components of waste material that would otherwise be discarded. Its deployment will bring the Ballyconnell Cement Plant in line with many of its Irish and European competitors. It is a critically important part of our investment program, supporting the continued development of the business and securing jobs in the long term.

Bernard Farrell, Managing Director of Construction Industry Supplies Division said ‘It is a critically important part of our programme to develop this business, to be competitive and to maintain employment in the local area’.

Paul O’Brien, CEO, Aventas Group said ‘This is the first significant investment in our Cement business for many years and it reflects our confidence in the business and our determination to grow it. The investment is fully funded from our own resources’.
