Cavan Schools Are Super Savers

As everybody takes a good look at their finances and remembers the value of regular saving, Cavan schools get ready to enter the An Post National Young Savers Awards for primary schools. Participating schools are in with a chance to win one of 12 prizes from the €30,000 Cyril has saved for this year"s prize money. Some 3,000 schools around the country have already received their Dialann Scoile with a reminder from Cyril that schools must be in to win. This Friday, November 7, is the closing date for schools to enter the Young Savers scheme. The 12 winning schools will attend an awards ceremony at the GPO in Dublin, during December. The awards recognise the achievements of both the students and teachers/administrators involved in the Cyril the Squirrel Savings Scheme. The An Post run "Young Savers" scheme is a fun classroom activity, which teaches children good saving habits from an early age. Saving "Cyril the Squirrel" stamps enables children to learn how to plan their savings and to save for school-trips, family holidays, presents or a treat they can buy for themselves. Fiona O"Keeffe of An Post explains the popularity of the National Young Savers Awards: 'The Awards aim to help young people manage their money wisely. 'Children acquire the savings habit more easily when it is practised in a group atmosphere that generates enthusiasm and the Cyril the Squirrel concept makes saving fun and exciting for children. I would encourage schools to get their entry in the post before November 7.'
