Footage emerges of 1989 win in Croke Park

Footage has emerged on YouTube of Cavan’s famous 1989 National League quarter-final win over Derry in Croke Park.

The Blues, under the management of legendary former player Gabriel Kelly, had just secured promotion from Division 2 of the league and took on Division 1 side and Ulster rivals Derry in difficult conditions at HQ in March, 1989.

Cavan fell behind early on but two goals from Ramor United’s Derek McDonnell helped them set up a semi-final against Dublin, in which they were narrowly beaten.

There are numerous links with the current Cavan team. Of those who played in the 1989 game, Pat Faulkner, Damien O’Reilly, Dessie Brady and Seamus Donohoe all have sons on the current side, all of whom featured against Monaghan last week.
