Much-loved teacher, Eithne McKay, passes away

It is with regret that The Anglo-Celt notes the death of Eithne McKay (née McCarthy) last Tuesday, September 26.

Mrs McKay from Cavan Town and formerly Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, was the wife of John McKay, the former CEO of the Cavan Vocational Education Committee (VEC).

Mrs McKay herself was a much-loved teacher in Cavan Vocational School, now Breifne College. She taught in the secretarial department there for post Leaving Cert students for many years.

She was one of the driving forces behind the campaign to establish Cavan College under the auspices of the VEC. From humble beginnings, the College grew into Cavan Institute, today offering a large range of Further Education and Training (FET) and link courses.

Fianna Fáil councillor Clifford Kelly, current deputy chair of the Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB), was among those to pay tribute to Mrs McKay following her passing and expressed his sympathy to her family.

"It was with great regret that I learned of Eithne’s death. She was a person who made a major contribution to the development of Cavan Institute. It was her late husband, John, who came up with the whole idea when he came as chief executive to Cavan.

"Eithne had worked there for quite a number of years. Eithne and John made a huge contribution to its development," he said.

Mrs McKay sadly passed away earlier this week after a brief illness. Beloved wife of the late John, she is survived by her daughter Fiona, son-in-law Declan, grand daughter Jane, sisters Neasa and Dearbhal, brother Colm, nieces, relatives and friends.

She will repose this evening (Friday), September 29, at the McMahon Funeral Home, Farnham Rd, Cavan (H12C821) from 5pm until 7pm. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated tomorrow (Saturday) in the Cathedral of Ss Patrick and Felim, Cavan, at 11am, for cremation afterwards in the Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan.

May she rest in peace.
