Posthumous award for Det Gda Adrian Donohoe

Kilnaleck native Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe received a posthumous award for his contribution to their communities through sport.

He was one of two gardaí killed in the line of duty to receive a Cóiste Siamsa Sportstar award. The other was Roscommon Garda Tony Golden.

The awards were presented at the 28th Cóiste Siamsa Sportstar awards in the Farnham Estate Hotel and Resort in Cavan last Friday evening.

Det Garda Donohoe was on cash escort duty when he was shot dead during a robbery at Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan in January 2013.

Gda Golden was gunned down in October 2015 as he accompanied a domestic violence victim to collect her belongings from her home in Omeath.

During their lives, both men contributed significantly to sports in their respective localities.

Born 1972, from an early age, Det Donohoe showed great interest and promise for GAA, representing his hometown club of Crosserlough at midfield, winning medals at various under age levels.

Det Donohoe also represented St Patrick’s College, Cavan, playing in all school teams with distinction, including the MacRory team, the Cavan Minor Team, St Patrick's GAA Lordship (winning a Senior ACC Cup Medal in 2001) and the Louth/Meath Garda Football Team.

St Patrick's GAA Club Lordship renamed their club playing grounds to 'Adrian Donohoe Pairc' in tribute to his lasting legacy.

Cóiste Siamsa is the national governing body of sporting clubs in the garda organisation.
