Farmers need support in Budget says O’Reilly

Senator Joe O'Reilly has stated that he will be lobbying directly the Minister For Agriculture and Minister For Finance seeking 'real assistance for farmers in the budget.

"Farmers are hit by fodder shortages due to weather, increases in price of feed, and reduced cattle prices," he stated.

"Suckler farmers are in particular difficulty and their numbers are reducing," he said.

Senator O'Reilly believes the payments in Areas Of Natural Constraints (ANCs) should be fully restored to previous levels.

"This would directly benefit farmers in Cavan Monaghan who are in an ANC," explained the senator.

He further believes there should be an increase in the suckler cow grant "to help this particularly challenged group of farmers".

"Our farm families, who are the backbone of rural Ireland, ensuring a ready supply of quality food and maintaining the rural economy are in need of support. They should get that support in this upcoming budget," concluded Senator O'Reilly.
