Baby joy for Deputy Niamh Smyth

Deputy Niamh Smyth made her own little bit of history last week by being the first female TD from Cavan to give birth to a little baby girl at Cavan General Hospital at 5.58am last Thursday morning, November 17.
Little dark haired Juliet Maura Conaty weighed in at 6lbs and 10ozs and both mother and daughter are fit and well. Deputy Smyth confirmed that the Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and her colleagues in Fianna Fáil did send flowers of congratulations to her office.
Smiling broadly in the maternity unit last Saturday for pictures by The Anglo-Celt photographer, Sheila Rooney, a naturally delighted Niamh was high in her praise for the team at Cavan General. “I have to compliment the staff here who do a superb job and run a wonderful maternity unit. I believe here in the maternity today, there are 12 girls and one boy,” she remarked. With that ratio, Niamh joked that Juliet might have a problem finding her Romeo when she is older.
“They have been fabulous here in the unit and my Consultant was Dr Essajee. The nurses and the midwives have been fabulous. I could not compliment them highly enough. My husband James and myself arrived down here 10 days early – little Juliet gave us all a surprise. The staff made it all so easy and I’m delighted to be here in our local hospital,” said Deputy Smyth.
“It has been a momentous and very happy year for me – being the year of the centenary you don’t expect things like this to happen to you all in one year. It has all been hugely exciting for myself and James. I would like to thank everyone who have been sending us texts and messages,” she added.
Proud mother and daughter expect to get home from the Maternity Unit at Cavan General tomorrow (Thursday).
Niamh confirmed that she intends to return to work as soon as possible and utilise the creche facility in Leinster House.
